Nordic skiing in western Massachusetts presents more adverse conditions than your typical sport, but none more troublesome than a lack of snow and tricky logistics at Mohawk High School. However, as the motto of teams in Berkshire County now may read, the race must go on. Thanks to the efforts of dedicated parents, coaches, officials and an 18-year old golfer, the race course was whipped into shape despite two problematic bridge crossings, some sketchy turns and a stretch of ice that was as much roots as snow. So, by the time the first skier was out of the starting block everything was set to go and an interesting day of classic skiing was there to look forward to.

The girl’s race yielded few surprises and only served as a platform for the Greylock girls to prove once again that they deserve to claim the top spot every week. Mackenzie Hitchcock defended her skate wins with a very impressive classic performance, once again coasting out in front and never looking back. Following her for the second week running was Cate Costley, and then Laura Nolan, who successfully cracked the top three, displacing the host favorite Brenna Keogh to sixth place. Greylock made it a sweep through the top five with Allegra Robertson and Haley Mahar rounding out the team score for a record low of ten total, well ahead of their next closest competition Mohawk.

Working hard to keep up with the girl’s team, the Greylock boys had their most dominant showing of the year as well. Notably, Jordan Tuboly burst into the spotlight with arguably the best race of the season for all skiers, posting a commanding win ten seconds up on Terry Fowler and a full thirty in front of teammate Luke Costley. Joining the party was Josh Harrington who surprised maybe even himself with an astounding effort, edging out Greg Karabinos, also of Mount Greylock, Lenox’s Bill Prescott and Wahconah’s Kyle Dempsey.
