The best high school skiers in Massachusetts converged today at Weston Ski Track.  On a course that was full of twists and turns the Eastern Mass. skiers represented their home course well.  As one might expect the terrain was relatively flat, with the largest hill on the course, Mount Weston, constructed entirely out of manmade snow.  It was a day where the best results were submitted by those who worked the transitions with power and maintained their speed whenever possible.

Girl's race winner Corey Stock gets underway.

In the girl’s race sophomore Corey Stock showed why she is one of the best junior skiers in the country, out pacing the girl’s field and much of the boys in a time of 16:32.  Stock finished over a minute faster then eighth grader Cate Brams, who had an amazing day – noticeably attacking every transition with the aggression of a veteran.  Hannah Smith of Wellesley climbed the last step of the podium three seconds behind Brams in a time of 17.44.

In the boy’s race Jackson Rich surprised many skiing up to two-time EHS Champion Chris Stock, the eventual fourth place finisher, from 15 seconds back taking the victory in a time of 14:50.  Stock’s Lincoln Sudbury teammate Isaac Hoenig also looked strong as he skied to second place, just eight seconds behind Rich.  The race of the day might have come from third place finisher Andrew Reed, who impressively worked his way up through the field of talented skiers.

The second EHS/J2 qualifier comes to Western Massachusetts next weekend for the classical race.  Finish times will be compiled with today’s results to determine the skiers that will represent Mass. at the J2 (20 skiers each gender) and EHS (24 each gender) Championships.  The race is scheduled to be held at Mount Greylock Regional High School, however with hard rains forecasted for most of New England tomorrow it is likely that the race will have to be moved to Notchview Reservation or Prospect Mountain.  Either way the racing will be exciting, with skiers battling for every critical second.
