Jetties in the Red Tide: Berkshire League Gets Classical at Notchview

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

Greylock's Josh Harrington catches Hoosac's Dan Dermody as they approach the finish of yesterday's classic race at Notchview. Harrington won the race by one second over teammate Matt Cheung, while Dermody finished seventh.

As the season heads towards the final stretch, the trend in results remains the same. A fun Notchview course, coupled with clear, blue skies, provided quite the atmosphere for the racers competing in their third straight classic race. On the boys’ side of things Mt Greylock’s Josh Harrington came away with his third victory, narrowly edging out teammate Matt Cheung by one second. If it weren’t for an untimely fall before the final climb, teammate Luke Costley was in position to rearrange the podium and possibly take the victory. Unfortunately for Costley, the fall cost him some precious seconds and he fell into a third place tie with fellow Mountie Greg Karabinos. Northfield Mount Hermon’s Miles Schelling edged out Greylock’s Alex White to break up any hope the Mounties had of taking the top five spots for the second straight week.

Mackenzie Hitchcock (MG) leads the second wave out on course on her way to a four second vicotry over teammate Cate Costley.

In the girls’ race, Mackenzie Hitchcock of Mt. Greylock prevailed in her second league race in two weeks with a time of 20:38, four seconds faster than teammate Cate Costley. Over a minute behind the two leaders was third place finisher Josie Marshall out of Lenox, Northfield Mount Hermon’s Nora Heffner, and Mohawk’s Brenna Keogh. Rounding out the top ten for the girls was a slew of Mounties, as they once again took home the team victory.

The boys’ JV race winner was Greylock’s Sean Houston in a time of 20:10, a time which would have been fast enough to finish tenth in the varsity boys race. He was followed by teammates Warren Taylor, John Karabinos, and Jonah Majumder.

For the girls’ JV, Chloe Anderson gapped her Greylock counterpart from the first wave, Sophia Dastoli, on the final climb ski to the win in a time of 24:58.  Anderson’s time would have been good enough for 12th place in the varsity girls race.  Fellow Greylock skiers Zavi Sheldon, Oona Wood and Sophie Gerry took places third, fourth and fifth respectively.

‘No One Likes the Yankees’: Greylock Dominant on Home Course

Monday, January 24th, 2011

The mass start of the boy's long course.

Eighty-five boys and sixty-four girls started in mass on the trails of Mount Greylock High School on Saturday morning in the Berkshire League’s second classical race of the season.

Matthew Cheung (MG), career victory number one and counting...

In the boys’ race Hoosac Valley’s Dan Dermody took things out hard, before settling in with a pack of six Greylock skiers who were skiing relaxed, but quickly.  Behind them were a few more Greylock skiers followed by three from Amherst.  The lead pack entered the woods all together around the 3.5 kilometer mark, but by the time they came out of the woods a kilometer later the pack was down to only four Greylock skiers. The race for the individual win was on!

The skiers then disappeared into a large open field. By the time they came back into sight of the crowd, proven running standout, Matthew Cheung, had opened up a twenty meter lead over teammate Josh Harrington with one kilometer remaining in the 6.5km course.  As the two sprinted to the line that gap was closed to just inches, but Cheung was able to hold on for his first career skiing victory in a time of 21:27.  Greg Karabinos (MG) charged ahead of teammate Luke Costley for third.  In total, the Mounties place nine skiers in the top ten, with only Hoosac Valley’s Dan Dermody breaking things up, finishing in seventh place.

Things in the girls race shaped up a little differently, but the end result was very similar.  With Greylock’s star Cate Costley taking on a cheering role due to illness, the individual win was up for grabs.  From the start Costley’s teammate Mackenzie Hitchcock took things out quickly, even though she was skiing smooth and relaxed with a smile on her face.

Throughout the 6.5km course Hitchcock lengthened her lead over teammate Laura Nolan, who also had a sizable lead over the eventual third place finisher, Mohawk’s Brenna Keogh.  As the girls crossed the line it was Hitchcock with a time of 24:41, who would climb to the top step on the podium, with Nolan roughly a minute behind in a time of 25:46, Keogh another minute back in 26:42 and Lenox’s Josie Marshall toeing the line in 27:35.  After that it was all Greylock in the top ten as the Mounties took places five through ten.

In the boy’s 4.8km short course race it was Greylock’s Zach Harrington who came across the line first in a time of 21:07 with a small margin of victory over teammate Caleb Raymond.  Zach’s twin brother Alex finished third, 13 seconds off the pace. MG’s Iain Kuttner and Hoosac Valley’s William Morrissette finished 4th and 5th respectively.

The girl’s short course race came down to an exciting finish between Greylock’s Greta Savitsky and a charging Lenox skier, Lydia Graham. Savitsky held on to the lead for a one second victory.  Greylock’s Sophie Gerry, Zavi Sheldon, and Grace Smith rounded out the top five.

A Lot of the Same

By: Luke Costley

Another week of racing in the Berkshires, another set of similar results. Mohawk Regional High School hosted this year’s first classical race of the year over the holiday weekend and kicked things off in bitter cold temperatures and blue skies. Mohawk’s narrow trails changed the start format this week, with race organizers opting to use 15-second interval starts for individuals instead of the wave format of previous races. The course, however, did not disappoint. It wound its way through the school’s campus offering a variety of terrain and snow conditions to keep it interesting.

Snow Squalls and Face Plants: The Berkshire League Rolls On

Mount Greylock's Josh Harrington earns his first career victory.

Times in the Snow
By: Luke Costley
Berkshire County saw its second league race of the year go off amid snow flurries on Sunday afternoon, as athletes took to the trails at Prospect Mountain once again. Limited snow conditions at Lenox’s Cranwell resort forced the re-location of the race, but as always Prospect’s trails did not disappoint. The only differences between last week’s race was an additional loop on the lower section of the course and less climbing towards the end.
