Berkshire League Race, 4.5km Freestyle at Notchview

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

On a course which previewed the first few kilometers and the final one and a half kilometers of Wednesday’s states race the Berkshire League once again went to battle.  In the girls individual race it was Northfield Mount Hermon’s Maggie Fellows, skiing in the first wave, who captured the top spot on the podium by picking up four seconds on Mount Greylock’s Mackenzie Hitchcock over the last kilometer.  Fellows finished with a time of 15:21 edging Hitchock by one second.  Mount Greylock’s Jackie Lemme once again showed that she enjoyes the challenging climbs of Notchview by rounding out the top three 25 seconds off the pace set by Fellows.  The Mountie girls showed that they are ready for Wednesday by placing there four scorers in the top six and six in the top ten.

In the boy’s race Patrick Joslin of Mount Greylock completed the perfect league season by blazing through the short course in a time of 12:21.  Lenox’s Bill Prescott showed that he is peaking perfectly for states by finishing second just 25 seconds off of Joslin’s time and the Mountie’s Cary White continued his impressive season by taking the final podium spot.  The race of the day was seen in the first wave where Lenox’s Donnie Miller hung on to the draft of fourth place finisher Dylan Dethier, of Mount Greylock, to take fifth place, a career best.  The MG boys continued their winning ways by placing their fourth skier Greg Karabinos in eigth.

All the work has been done, now it is all about resting well for states.  Good luck everyone!

Congratulation to those skiers that will be representing Massachusetts at the EHS and J2 Championships.  We are equally proud of all the skiers that made the teams as well as those that have worked so hard, but came up just short.

Berkshire Nordic League Freestyle Mass Start Race

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

Notchview hosted today’s 6k freestyle race, suitably recovered from the ice storm that ravaged the area earlier in the winter. Successful and timely grooming packed down the fresh coating of new-fallen snow in time for the boy’s varsity mass start. The race was strategic from the beginning, with a pack of 11 skiers gradually breaking away from the field. Just over halfway into the race, eventual winner Patrick Joslin made a slight break from the chase pack en route to his 5th consecutive league victory. The chase pack of four skiers finished less than ten seconds later, with Mt. Greylock’s Dylan Dethier, Lenox’s Bill Prescott, Greylock’s Cary White, and Wahconah’s Kyle Dempsey taking spots 2-5. Mt. Greylock took the team competition with 13 points, while Lenox was second with 31. On the girls’ side, Mackenzie Hitchcock of Mt. Greylock notched her second victory of the year, leading the Mounties to victory with the help of a third-place finish from Jackie Lemme. Posting her strongest finish of the year and finishing just three seconds behind the leader was Northfield-Mount Hermon’s Maggie Fellows, in second place. Mt. Greylock had the low team score with 20, followed by Lenox’s 41. Matt Cheung of Mt. Greylock claimed the JV race on the boys’ side while Lenox’s Josie Marshall won on the girls’ side

MA All State Individual Classic Championships / EHS and J2 Qualifier

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Here is the course map and start list for Sunday’s race at Mount Greylock.  The base is slightly transformed granualar and we had several inches of powder fall this evening.  Temperatures should be down near 10ºF over Saturday night into Sunday morning, but then rise to just below freezing by race time… should make for some interesting waxing.

MA All State Individual Freestyle Championships

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Skiers from across the state met for the first time this year at the Weston Ski Track for the first of two J2/Eastern High School Qualifier. The 6 kilometer course consisted of two laps of rolling V2 terrain and provided for some fast skiing. The race format, waves of four every fifteen seconds, allowed for a variety of strategies and tactics, as pack skiing showed to be successful. Lincoln-Sudbury teammates Isaac Hoenig and Chris Stock skied away with the boys’ race, with top J2 qualifier Jackson Rich of Andover following in 3rd. On the girls’ side, Lincoln Sudbury’s Corey Stock and Newton-South’s Olga Golovkina broke away from the field to claim the top two spots, while Wellesley’s Hannah Smith rounded out the podium. Corey Stock was also the top J2 qualifier for the girls.

Berkshire Nordic League Sprint Race

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

The Berkshire League continued with another new format this week holding its first ever sprint race.  There were many challenges including two fast corners, the ‘Headwall’, ice and dry windblown snow, but throughout the biggest challenge was the fierce competition.  At the end, however, not much changed at the top of the leader board.  In the girls’ race Mount Greylock once again showed their depth in the A Final with Laura Nolan, Mackenzie Hitchcock and Allegra Robertson all pushing the pace at the front for the first half of the race.  On the ‘Headwall’, however, it was Lenox’s Sara Plager who took charge and did not let up until she crossed the line with the clear victory.  Mount Greylock took the next four spots led by senior Camille Robertson.  In the boys race Mount Greylock’s senior captains Patrick Joslin and Dylan Dethier outpaced the rest of the field finishing first and second respectively.  Mount Greylock’s Jordan Tuboly overtook Waconah’s Mason Bushway and Kyle Dempsey for third to give the Mounties the indisputable victory.

League Race – Mount Greylock High School – Classic Mass Start

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Mt Greylock continued its winning ways on the snow today with victories on both the boys’ and girls’ sides of the 7 kilometer mass start race. Led by race winner Mackenzie Hitchcock, the Mountie girls logged their most dominant victory this season, claiming 7 of the top 8 spaces. The real surprise came in the boys’ race, which saw a surging Wahconah team challenge Greylock in a nail-biting 20-21 Mountie win. Patrick Joslin took the top spot for the third straight week, but Warriors Kyle Dempsey and Terrence Fowler claimed the final podium spots, spurring their team to its best finish in recent years.
