The Late Great New England Ski Race…aka…The Propsect Spring Fling… This Weekend

FasterSkier and Prospect Mountain are teaming up to put on the second annual Late Great new England Ski Race/Prospect Spring Fling.

Come out for the last ski race(s) of the year in New England (yes…the March Hare Nordic Ski Race starts at 10:00 and we are starting at 10:01…).

Sunday, March 29

Conditions are still good at Prospect. There is plenty of snow, but it is very dirty. You could definitely use good skis, but older skis may be preferable due to the dirt.

The Events:

10:01 — 8km Mass Start Pursuit Race (5km Classic straight into a 5km Freestyle)

11:30 — Obstacle Course Sprint (The sprint format will be a March Madness inspired head-to-head bracket style ski off)

Prizes will be awarded for both races, and overall winners (male and female) will be crowned the Great Champions! Participants do not have to do both races. But to qualify for Great Champion, you must complete both events.

Festive attire encouraged and rewarded! The person wearing the best costume will be named the Jester of Fling.

The Place:

The famous Prospect Mountain in Woodford, VT – the land where there is always snow. Conditions are currently excellent at Prospect, and the forecast for the remainder of the week is favorable.

The Cost:

$20 – Proceeds to benefit the Berkshire Nordic Ski Club. Day of race registration only beginning at 8:30am.

Here are the results of the race held today at Prospect Mountain in Woodford, VT. This annual race raises awareness about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, a silent killer that claims the lives of nearly 2500 infants in the US alone every year.

A Day for the Community: The Mathias Jessup Bartles Scholarship Race

The 2nd Mathias Jessup Bartels benefit cross-country race and tour was held this Sunday, February 15th, at Mt. Greylock Regional High School. The school’s trails and fields had held enough snow for what ended up being some quality classic skiing–some klister required. The 6 kilometer race course was fairly flat, and saw several competitors brave the terrain in skate equipment, double-poling the entire race, including some battles on the uphills. Topher Sabot edged Nick Fogel for the 6 kilometer victory, a short distance ahead of third-place finisher Matt Voisin. The women’s field was led by Jen Mygatt, followed by Andrea Fisher and Camille Robertson. The well-attended race attracted over 70 competitors for a fast, sunny ski. A touring option was also available for the 6k race course.
The 2 kilometer race sailed off a short time later, at 11 o’clock, and provided a chance for families, beginners, and youngsters to showcase their talents in a shorter course. In a close battle, Will Nolan and Alex Harrington tied for the victory.
Racers and spectators were greeted inside by a significant spread of waffles and other baked goods as prizes were awarded. A bevy of gifts were available as rewards across age category and distance, gifts donated by various businesses including The Mill on the Floss, Overland, Fasterskier.com, Pappa Charlie’s, and many more. All told, close to $2500 was raised to benefit the Mathias Jessup Bartels Memorial Scholarship Fund. Mathias was an outstanding young man - a scholar, athlete, and leader of his class. He was a high school junior and standout member of the Mt. Greylock Nordic Ski Team when he died in his sleep on January 31, 2004 of sudden cardiac arrest due to a heart arrhythmia of unknown cause. The Mathias Jessup Bartels Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior at Mt. Greylock who exhibits the integrity, kindness, and commitment to excellence shown by Mathias.

A sincere thank you goes out to those who donated prizes as well as to the skiers, spectators,cheering squads, timers, starters, finishers, flag setters, flag wavers, waffle makers, waffle eaters, food providers, cleaner uppers, signer uppers, good looking parents, better looking kids, and fabulous coaches, from the grateful Bartels family and from the entire Mt. Greylock Nordic Ski community. The event was one of good cheer, good weather, good competition, and good company–all in the name of an amazing cause.

MIAA Team Championship

Warm temperatures were the order of the day for today’s Massachusetts Nordic State Championships in Windsor, MA at the Notchview Ski Reservation. 250 racers wearing t-shirts, tank tops, and even bathing suits skated around the 7.5k course as the sun emerged and the snow softened throughout the day.

The girls race began at 10:30 AM with reasonably fast snow in what has become the traditional States format: 8 waves spaced two minutes apart with skier from each team in each wave. A pack of girls in the second wave quickly emerged as the group to beat, as they passed every skier in the first wave by the race’s conclusion. Freshman Corey Stock of Lincoln-Sudbury emerged as the winner in a time of 23:41, followed by Wellsley’s Hannah Smith 24 seconds behind. Newton North’s Olga Golovkina rounded out the podium with a third-place finish in a time of 24:18. Mt. Greylock took first in the team competition for the second year in a row, putting 5 skiers in the top 10 through the results of Mackenzie Hitchcock (4th) Laura Nolan (6th) Jackie Lemme (7th) and Amy Santella (8th), and Camille Robertson (10th). Concord-Carlisle was 2nd, led by a 5th place from Blair Robinson and a 9th place from Jessie Pearl.

The course had further slowed down by the boys’ 12 PM start, leaving a soft snow surface for the 128 men’s racers. Isaac Hoenig of Lincoln-Sudbury came from the third wave to claim his second consecutive individual state title, edging teammate Chris Stock (22:01), who distanced himself from third-place finisher Patrick Joslin (22:14) in the final kilometer of the race. The Mt. Greylock boys claimed their 4th straight state title with 21 points and five skiers in the top ten, as Joslin was supported by teammates Cary White (4th), Jordan Tuboly (6th), Dylan Dethier (8th), and Greg Karabinos (10th). Lenox placed all four scorers in the top 20 and was second with 45 points, led by fifth-place finisher Bill Prescott. Lincoln-Sudbury took third with 67 points.

The atmosphere was fantastic, with intense competitors, voracious supporters, and close finishes befitting a state championship. Thanks to Notchview for hosting and to the countless volunteers who helped with the timing, race setup and cleanup today and all year long.

The 2nd Mathias Jessup Bartels benefit cross-country ski race and tour will be held on Sunday, February 15th, at 10AM at Mt. Greylock Regional High School. In the event of limited snow coverage at Mt. Greylock, check massnordic.com for race updates.

The event will feature a 5km classical race, a 2km race for beginners, and a lollipop race for young kids. Skiers of all ages and abilities are welcome.

Prizes will be awarded to overall and age category winners. A $15.00 donation is suggested at day of race registration. All proceeds benefit the Mathias Jessup Bartels Memorial Scholarship Fund. Checks can be made out to: Mt. Greylock Regional High School - M.J. Bartels Scholarship Fund.

Berkshire League Race, 4.5km Freestyle at Notchview

On a course which previewed the first few kilometers and the final one and a half kilometers of Wednesday’s states race the Berkshire League once again went to battle. In the girls individual race it was Northfield Mount Hermon’s Maggie Fellows, skiing in the first wave, who captured the top spot on the podium by picking up four seconds on Mount Greylock’s Mackenzie Hitchcock over the last kilometer. Fellows finished with a time of 15:21 edging Hitchock by one second. Mount Greylock’s Jackie Lemme once again showed that she enjoyes the challenging climbs of Notchview by rounding out the top three 25 seconds off the pace set by Fellows. The Mountie girls showed that they are ready for Wednesday by placing there four scorers in the top six and six in the top ten.

In the boy’s race Patrick Joslin of Mount Greylock completed the perfect league season by blazing through the short course in a time of 12:21. Lenox’s Bill Prescott showed that he is peaking perfectly for states by finishing second just 25 seconds off of Joslin’s time and the Mountie’s Cary White continued his impressive season by taking the final podium spot. The race of the day was seen in the first wave where Lenox’s Donnie Miller hung on to the draft of fourth place finisher Dylan Dethier, of Mount Greylock, to take fifth place, a career best. The MG boys continued their winning ways by placing their fourth skier Greg Karabinos in eigth.

All the work has been done, now it is all about resting well for states. Good luck everyone!
