By: Haley Maher, Greg Karabinos, and Nate Nurmi

After much doubt about whether the ski race would actually take place, Amherst school hosted a successful competition. The skiers began their day under a grey and overcast sky with temperatures that chilled racers and spectators alike. The weather resulted in cold, hard snow and conditions ideal for fast skiing. Both Greylock teams took home the win today, resulting in unblemished records for several years running.

Due to the recent balmy temperatures and loss of snow suffered by Notchview, the starting line was in the lower field, as opposed to previous races. This new format led to several false starts in the boys varsity race. Greg Karabinos captured the gold for the boys race today, with a time of 12:33, his first varsity career win. Terry Fowler came in second, the first skier for Wahconah, seizing the silver with a time of 12:45, and Bill Prescott took the bronze with a time of 12:56. Jordan Tuboly, leaving the start line prematurely and earning a fifteen second penalty, came in fourth with a time of 13:11, missing out on tying for third.

The girls race began more cleanly than the boys, with no false starts and racers eager to escape the cold of the field. Brenna Keogh, dominating the course in 15:21, skied away victorious after consistently placing in the top seven for all previous league races. Mackenzie Hitchcock and Cate Costley, the league’s top two skeirs, both from Greylock, were absent from today’s race, attending a Junior Olympic Qualifier in Vermont. However Greylock remained characteristically strong, with Laura Nolan taking second place with a time of 15:37. Josie Marshall proudly represented Lenox as she skied to third place, and NMH’s Nora Hefner rounded out the top four with a time of 15: 46. The Greylock girls then proved their depth, taking all spots 5-11.

Bree Flynn-Kasuba and Sean Houston, both from Greylock, won both JV races.

The best high school skiers in Massachusetts converged today at Weston Ski Track. On a course that was full of twists and turns the Eastern Mass. skiers represented their home course well. As one might expect the terrain was relatively flat, with the largest hill on the course, Mount Weston, constructed entirely out of manmade snow. It was a day where the best results were submitted by those who worked the transitions with power and maintained their speed whenever possible.

Girl's race winner Corey Stock gets underway.

In the girl’s race sophomore Corey Stock showed why she is one of the best junior skiers in the country, out pacing the girl’s field and much of the boys in a time of 16:32. Stock finished over a minute faster then eighth grader Cate Brams, who had an amazing day – noticeably attacking every transition with the aggression of a veteran. Hannah Smith of Wellesley climbed the last step of the podium three seconds behind Brams in a time of 17.44.

Boy's race winner Jackson Rich.

In the boy’s race Jackson Rich surprised many skiing up to two-time EHS Champion Chris Stock, the eventual fourth place finisher, from 15 seconds back taking the victory in a time of 14:50. Stock’s Lincoln Sudbury teammate Isaac Hoenig also looked strong as he skied to second place, just eight seconds behind Rich. The race of the day might have come from third place finisher Andrew Reed, who impressively worked his way up through the field of talented skiers.

The second EHS/J2 qualifier comes to Western Massachusetts next weekend for the classical race. Finish times will be compiled with today’s results to determine the skiers that will represent Mass. at the J2 (20 skiers each gender) and EHS (24 each gender) Championships. The race is scheduled to be held at Mount Greylock Regional High School, however with hard rains forecasted for most of New England tomorrow it is likely that the race will have to be moved to Notchview Reservation or Prospect Mountain. Either way the racing will be exciting, with skiers battling for every critical second.

Not so much as a single cloud could blemish the perfect blue sky this morning at Notchview Reservation, indicative of the day’s race and the results the Mount Greylock Nordic Ski team earned. The Mounties went a perfect six for six in today’s race, winning both varsity races, both junior varsity races and both team events. Skiing on Notchview’s picturesque trails, in and out of the woods and across huge open fields, all athletes enjoyed their final classic league race while many prepped for tomorrow’s EHS and J2 qualifier outside of Boston.

Once again, not much changed at the top of the heap in the girl’s varsity race as Mackenzie Hitchcock cruised to victory again, outpacing Cate Costley by about a minute. Costley’s time of twenty-three minutes, fifty-nine seconds was still enough to put her safely in second with ninety seconds before Mohawk’s Brenna Keogh and Lenox’s Josie Marshall. Despite an equipment malfunction off the starting line, Greylock’s Laura Nolan fought her way back to fifth despite an unlucky beginning and finished with, all things considered, a very impressive showing. Amy Santella, Haley Mahar and Allegra Robertson rounded out the scoring for Greylock. Alexa Adams won the junior varsity.

On the boy’s side, “it was like déjà vu all over again” as the podium in this race was identical to that of the Mohawk race two weekends ago. Jordan Tuboly snagged his second win of the year, beating Wahconah’s Terry Fowler and Greylock’s Luke Costley. After them came Lenox’s Bill Prescott and Wahconah’s Kyle Dempsey making the top five all within a minute of the lead. In the junior varsity race, Greylock took not only top spot in Aaron Taylor’s win, but the top eight overall. Alex White followed in second, Sean Houston in third and Johnny Karabinos dominated on his way to fourth.

The Berkshire County League race failed to disappoint yet again on a warm afternoon in soggy conditions at Mount Greylock High School. The Greylock team defended their home turf with pride, taking team honors and sweeping the individual crowns in both the boy’s and girl’s varsity races. The boy’s race was as exciting as ever, with a new leader board once again whereas the girl’s side was routine, but far from boring. A big thank you also has to be made to the Greylock crew who put on a stellar race despite no help from the weather.

Mount Greylock's Mackenzie Hitchcock (bib #103) and Cate Costley (bib #113) lead the other races out during the mass start at Mount Greylock.

Mackenzie Hitchcock skied away with this one as well, giving her a perfect four for four record to date. Her closest competitors were few and far between, as the field spread out quickly by the beginning of the second lap after the mass start. Teammates Cate Costley and Laura Nolan followed in second and third respectively for the second week running, leaving little doubt in anybody’s mind of who is the county powerhouse.

Fourth place finisher Terry Fowler (Wahconah, bib# 99) leads eventual race winner Luke Costly (MG, bib #43), second place finisher Josh Harrington (MG, bib #63) and third place finisher Paul Quakenbush (Amherst, bib# 226).

On the flipside, the boy’s race was a down-to-the-wire thriller. For almost the entire race, Wahconah’s Terry Fowler had a seemingly insurmountable lead and looked in control at the four kilometer mark. However, by the time he entered the stadium, Amherst’s Paul Quackenbush and Greylock’s Josh Harrington and Luke Costley had caught him. The ensuing final stretch saw Costley take the lead and hold on for the win. Hot on his tail was Harrington, then Quackenbush and Fowler. Rounding out the top five was Jordan Tuboly, assuring another victory for the Mounties.
