The J2 and Eastern High School (EHS) programs were developed in the 1980s to bring together the finest young nordic skiers in the Eastern United States. “J2s” are 14 and 15 year olds, and the J2 teams are composed of the top 20 boys and 20 girls from each state from this age category. The EHS teams consist of the top 24 boys and 24 girls from each state who are selected from grades 9-12. This year’s competing states/regions include Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Idaho and Canada.

Qualifying for the Massachusetts EHS/J2 Teams

To earn a berth on the Massachusetts’ state teams, skiers must participate in two qualifying races in each of the skiing disciplines. The skate qualifier will be held on Sunday, January 24th at Weston Ski Track in Weston, MA and the classic qualifier will be held on Sunday, January 31st at Mt. Greylock Regional High School in Williamstown, MA.

Once the teams are chosen, ahtletes come together to represent their states at the J2 and EHS Championship events. This year the Eastern J2 Champions and National Invitational races will be held in Jackson, NH on March 5-7. The Eastern High School Championships will be held in Gilford, NH on March 12-14. Each state’s athletes spend the weekend together as cohesive groups; staying in the same lodging, eating meals together, and competing in a total of four races – classical, skate, sprint and relay.
