The U16 (J2) and Eastern High School (EHS) programs were developed in the 1980s to bring together the finest young Nordic skiers in the Eastern United States. “J2s” are 14 and 15 year olds, and the J2 teams are composed of the top 20 boys and 20 girls from each state from this age category. The EHS teams consist of the top 24 boys and 24 girls from each state who are selected from grades 9-12. This year’s competing states/regions include Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, and Canada with possible guests from Minnesota, Wisconsin or Idaho.

Qualifying for the Massachusetts EHS/J2 Teams

To earn a berth on the Massachusetts’ state teams, skiers must participate in two qualifying races (freestyle and classic) in each of the skiing disciplines. Both qualifiers will be held on Sunday, January 25th at Mohawk High School in Buckland, MA with the classic race in the morning and the freestyle race in the afternoon.

Once the teams are chosen, athletes come together to represent their states at the U16 and EHS Championship events. This year the Eastern U16 Championships will be held in Fort Kent, ME on March 13-15. The Eastern High School Championships will be held in Rumford, ME on March 20-22. Each state’s athletes spend the weekend together as cohesive groups; staying in the same lodging, eating meals together, and competing in a total of four races – classical, freestyle, sprint and relay.
