At the first day of North American Rollerski Biathlon Championships in Jericho, Vermont, U.S. national team members Lowell Bailey and Sara Studebaker skied and shot their way to victory. Despite the event’s name, no Canadians were in attendance.
Studebaker had a single penalty in the two-stage, 7.5 k sprint race. Sisters Tracy Colliander and Lanny Barnes rounded out the podium with one and two penalties, respectively.
Bailey also had just one miss over the two shooting stages in the men’s 10 k competition. Bill Bowler, a member of the national team for the first time this year, finished second, and veteran Jeremy Teela third.
National team member Annelies Cook had this report on the conditions in Jericho: “It was a real scorcher out there and my little engine got way too hot and totally shut down on me. That being said, I was super proud of my teamates! We all did the best that we could do on this day and are looking forward to another day. It was pretty impressive the amount of heat related problems there were out there today… I think a lot of people struggled and maybe tomorrow we will all be a bit better prepared to look at the heat as an obstacle.”
