Phil Widmer of the Alberta World Cup Academy and Mike Sinnott of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation advanced to the final of the Scandinavian Cup/Baltic Tour freestyle sprints on Wednesday to finish fifth and sixth, respectively, in Madona, Latvia.
Widmer won his quarterfinal ahead of fellow Canadian Michael Somppi (NDC Thunder Bay), who was fourth in the heat and 20th overall. Widmer went on to place second in his semifinal. Sinnott was second in his quarterfinal and third in his semi. The two made it to the final with four Norwegians. Kristian Tettli Rennemo was the winner.
In the women’s skate sprints, Becca Rorabaugh (Alaska Pacific University) made it to the quarterfinals, where she was third and ended up 14th overall. Canadian Alana Thomas (Nakkertok) was 23rd after placing fifth in her quarterfinal and Emily Hannah (Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club) was sixth in her quarterfinal to finish 29th.
Scandinavian Cup competition continues Thursday with 15 and 30 k freestyle mass starts in Madona.
