Parting Shots

So, David and I made it back to Alaska smoothly. It was a little melancholy leaving Park City, after a very successful summer of training and fun. But everything we learned there will be applied here in Fairbanks, and we would like to hope that we might spend future summers in Utah, training with the Ski Team. A big shout out to coaches Pete, Matt, and Pat who put an incredible amount of time and energy into us. Thanks guys, it was an amazing experience.

Tensile Strength

Working with a dedicated “Nordic Strength Coach” at the Center of Excellence has been one of the many new experiences for David and I this summer. Neither of us have ever been so watched during strength workouts before; at home its usually a “go into the gym by yourself and crank out as many sweet exercises that you think may apply to cross country skiing and try not to get embarrassed by the girls swim team” type deal. Of course, you can’t go too wrong with lots of dips, pull-ups, abs, and plyometric jumping, which is probably why we’ve been getting by.

But needless to say, I have learned some stuff down here, namely a few weird exercises that I never would have thought of, and if I had, probably wouldn’t have done. So we’ve been trying out things like “Turkish Get-Ups”, “Push-Jerks”, “Speed Pull Ups”, and “Med-Ball Thrusts”, and now we only have to worry about getting embarrassed by the alpiners.

Last Week Next

We are just about to embark on our last official training week of the NTG camp. It should be a good one, and by good I mean tough. With fairly high volume and plenty of intensity, power strength, and a skate time trial at Soldier Hollow, I hope to be feeling it in seven days time. I’ll keep you all updated on our survival rate.
