Williamstown Core Run

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Tonight we met at Linear Park in Williamstown to do a “fun run” with some core. The run was especially fun because we ran along route 2 and some of us had our shirts off…so we got some cars to beep at us. I have some pictures of a nice place at the top of Blair road overlooking the Green River valley.

To the New York Border

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

The bad news about today is that I don’t have any photos to share. Sorry. There was a nice sunset, but I didn’t have the time to whip out my phone and get a picture of it. I did forget to upload a picture I got from the 50 mile distance bike ride a couple days ago. Here it is, check it out.

More Distance

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Tuesday is usually bike day for me, but I didn’t want to do anything that was over my head like the Tuesday Night rides. So I decided to go exploring by myself. I’ve never gone South on Route 22 in New York after going over Petersburg Pass before. I thought it might be interesting to ride down to the intersection with Route 43. It ended as a 50+ mile easy ride that lasted just under 3 hours.

Distance Ski

Monday, July 28th, 2008

It’s been three long days since I last posted, I’ve fallen down on the job! I’ve really just been resting and recovering from the early mornings and late nights of the Tour de France. Good job to Carlos Sastre, he really defied all the predictions that Cadel Evans would wreck him in the time trial.

Tired

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

I’m pretty beat right now for various reasons, one of them being that I’ve been consistently waking up before 6:30 AM for stages of the Tour de Fance, the other that I did a nasty double session today. This will be a short post, considering the fact that sitting upright in a chair is pretty hard work for me right now. Here are some links that show what I’ve done today (and what I did yesterday).

Rollerski TT

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Races have always motivated me to go really hard, even if they mean nothing at all. Today for practice, we held a time trial down on a quiet road in Columbia county, NY. ((much to my dismay, I FORGOT my GPS…so I don’t have any sweet maps for you to look at. Sorry!!)) Topher or Matt will post the results…and maybe a video…on the BNSC Blog at some point. It was about 8k long (though we’ll never know now that I forgot my GPS) and it was mostly uphill. The weather did not cooperate during the race, but we didn’t really care…we skied right on through a torrential downpour and lightning.

30/30s and les Alpes

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

I finally got off my recovery schedule (whew, I was getting bored) and went out to do some classical 30 on/30 off intervals up Petersburg Pass in the Taconic Range. I felt so much more fresh and recovered than I had last Wednesday and Thursday. Perhaps I felt dead because I went entirely too hard on the Tuesday Night Ride, among other things.

The Mountains

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

I’m sorry I haven’t posted in a couple of days, I’m taking a little rest from training. I haven’t disappeared though.
I’m almost at the end of my few days off from training, and my legs are feeling much better. Right now, I’m watching the Tour de France race through the first real mountain stage in the Alps. They crossed into Italy about a quarter of the way into the stage, on a “beyond category” mountain pass climb, on the way to a first category climb up to the finish. The end of the stage is at a ski resort town called Prato Nevoso, and I think all the big guns will come out to contest the overall classification. Danny Pate of the American Garmin-Chipotle team is in a big breakaway that is about 12 minutes ahead of the field.

I think the stage is about to get interesting, so I’m going back to watching.

Short Recovery Run

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

The training group ran easy for about an hour today. (found in the second half of this workout report) I felt a little better today, though I was advised to abstain from participating in the core part of the workout for recovery’s sake. We ran up behind the Clark Art Museum on the Sheep Hill trail system. It was really casual and fun, and Pat was back with us for the first time since the Sweden Trip.

Mistake

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

I’ve made a small mistake in my training, and I feel bad because I didn’t practice what I’d preached. I overtrained a little, and I didn’t mean to. When I did the century ride on Saturday, I had planned on having a rest day on Sunday. That would’ve been well and good except for the fact that I worked for 12 hours on Saturday in a golf tournament. It wasn’t exactly “rest.” Then on Monday, I came to practice with legs that were deceivingly fresh. I did the interval workout and went home, but I don’t think I recovered properly because of the volume of exercise I had done over the past couple of days. The next day on the Tuesday Night Ride, my legs felt like rubber even before I got to the massive climbs. So yesterday when I got on roller skis, it was no surprise to my coaches that I just didn’t feel like I had any strength. The good news is that we recognized the symptoms of overtraining and I am now in the process of correcting it.
