Metz, Nilsson Win World Junior Sprint, North American Sends Six to Heats

The 2013 Junior World Championships are underway in Liberec, Czech Republic!

Stina Nilsson (SWE) and Lennart Metz (GER) won the women’s and men’s classic sprints respectively,besting a field of the top Junior skiers in the world.

After qualifying second, Nilsson skied away from German Victoria Carl in the final to take the victory.

Lennart qualified fourth, but won each of his heats, and open up a gap of 2.6 seconds in the final, cruising to the win in his first World Junior appearance.

Overall U.S.A. and Canada advanced six skiers to the heats, though none advacned out of the quarterfinals.

In the women’s race, Heather Mooney led the way for the U.S., placing 19th after qualifying in 20th, She was followed by teammate Corey Stock in 24th.

Katherine Stewart-Jones barely squeaked into the top-30, but moved up in the quarters for Canada, ending the day in 25th.

On the men’s side, Ben Saxton and Logan Hanneman placed 14th and 16th respectively. Hanneman qualified in 10th and Saxton in 11th.

The two American skiers matched up in the quarterfinals, placing 4th and 5th respectively.

Alexis Turgeon was the lone Canadian in the top-30, qualifying 30th and remaining in that spot in the final rankings.
