Thursday, March 11th, 2010

With two races down at the 2010 Junior National Championship in Presque Isle, ME, New England has come out strong.  With a total of 946 points the New England team is clearly the team to beat.  The Alaskan team showed strength in the FOJ class during the sprints and in both boys and girls J1 classes during the classic distance race.  They lurk in second with a total of 584 points, while the Intermountain Division is holding on to third with 385 points.

It was a spectacular day of racing at Kincaid Park. Hard tracks, perfectly groomed to the point you couldn’t even remember that a few days ago the stadium was a slush pond. It was amazing, the transformation. Great skiing on a variety of klister and even some teams using hard wax early in the day. The Alaskans totally dominated the day, winning every race EXCEPT for Far West taking the J2 Girls with Joanne Reid coming from behind for the win.

The wax was somewhere in the Universal Klister up to Toko Orange range. The course had to be changed from the planned route as the stadium area became unusable due to the warm weather here. Yesterday’s high in Anchorage was 45 degrees, which is only THREE degrees off the all time high for the day, so you can see that the snow is a little thin in places to say the least. But racing was great, the organizers did a fine job with what they had, and the course was fair and held up pretty well throughout the day.
