Wish I had pictures, because Iris just went for a long ski!
We went up to Waterville after classes on Wednesday. But because Heidi and the girls had been out in the morning as well, it took quite a while to pack warm clothes and snowsuits for the girls, ski clothes for the adults, skis and poles for the adults, skis for Iris, the double Chariot, snacks for a toddler and adults, a diaper bag with changes of clothes, and some other stuff I can’t even remember. And on top of that we were hoping to drop off my car to get snow tires (funny how things happen later than they should when you have kids). We didn’t, though, because the mechanic argued about proper size tires for my car and some other nonsense (they are on now, and it is great). So that was a waste of time.
Then we got to the center, got everyone out, got all of our stuff moved, and moved the car from the loading zone. Heidi had to nurse Sage, and while she did that I got Iris dressed to go and then went out with her for a little ski. Which took quite a while. Heidi brought Sage out and got her into the Chariot, but Iris wanted to ski more. So I went for a 10 minute loop.
But Iris wasn’t done. So I went for another 10 minutes. And another. And another. Iris skied close to a kilometer, plus some time getting helped up and down a small (but to her very big) hill!
Then we tried to put Iris in the Chariot so Heidi could ski, but she screamed for five minutes and woke her sister up. So we went back, brought everyone into the coffee shop upstairs (the Nordic Center was closed by now) and bought a snack and tried to calm everyone down, changed a couple diapers. I had to run to the car for my wallet and then for the diaper bag and maybe even a third trip. Then we negotiated with Iris about leaving. You would think the fact that the owner was closing up would help our case, but only if you haven’t argued with a two-year-old lately.
Then we headed home, stopping on the way to get my still snow-tire-less car where we had left it; Heidi had to stop there to nurse Sage so I transferred Iris’s car seat to my car and took her home and started her dinner before Heidi and Sage returned.
I wonder why we don’t do this every day…

Wow does that sound familiar! Bribery, coercion, pain and mental anguish. Sounds like you had a great but very typical day. Hang in there Justin, I hear it gets easier when they’re 8…

Oh man, does that ever sound familiar!!! I laughed and sympathized with you on that. Somehow, you’ve still managed to stay fit and fast.
You know, it’s all so fun with the kids and everything, but in the back of your (or maybe just me…) mind there’s always that yearning to be able to go out and train and race completely without the baggage or guilt, and you think about what you’re not able to get accomplished on a personal level. But, when I go into their bedroom in the morning when they’ve just woken up and they smile and laugh, it makes it all worth it. I also enjoy pulling the Chariot while following my wife around while she skis, although it’s harder here in New Mexico always skiing above 9,000 feet =P ) Gotta hand it to the wife…she makes it possible to even be able to go out and ski at all.
Anyway, good for you…you’re an inspiration to all of us “New Daddy” weekend warriors!
