I’ve been away from the blog for a while, a little overwhelmed with school, so here’s a recap of my first weekend at the camp in Jericho.
This time I wasn’t alone, finally! Many of the athletes from Lake Placid had arrived midweek and those from Maine, Minnesota and elsewhere began to trickle in around the time I arrived on Friday. I usually arrive at the range around 3pm on Fridays because I have class until 12:30. Since this was a volume week I had some shooting tests followed by a 3.5-hour skate and run, which I didn’t start until 4:30pm. You can imagine I made some pretty nervous double takes while jogging around at dusk on the rollerloop. After all, the army had been doing simulations all week and I wasn’t sure whom I’d run into on the loop.
Saturday morning I had more shooting tests and then a 10k Pursuit time trial with Haley. The time trial went well, I shot 0-1-2-0 (those numbers stand for misses). Despite being at the tail end of a 25-hour week I felt great skiing. The afternoon was a combination of studying for a physics exam and unintentionally falling asleep over my books. I can’t argue that I didn’t need the sleep—college is a sleep-starved environment. In the afternoon I returned to the range (as did the rain, no surprise) for technique-specific strength, which consists of 10 30-second sprints in each of four techniques (no pole, V2, V2 alternate, V1) combined with shooting. After that I did about 30 minutes of core strength, finishing in time for dinner for once!
Sunday I had technique combos, doing 10-minute loops of double pole, V2, V2 alternate, and normal skiing between shooting. My legs were tired by the end of the workout but I still felt mentally alert. I drove back to New Hampshire to hang up all my wet clothes from the weekend before heading out on a 3-hour bike ride in Vermont (it rained, again).

Aug 11th blog: AFTER READING YOUR WEEKEND TRAINING SCHEDULE I’LL NEVER, EVER COMPLAIN ABOUT MY WORKOUTS BEING TOUGH.
August 13th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
Hi Laura…
and you can be sure that I, unknown person to you, will never even try such a workout or that of your father. He ordered me to write on your blog, and as an obedient nurse, that’s what I am doing. What physical and emotional strength you must have to carry out this sport at this level, Laura!!
Should you ever wish to just not do anything for a day, and you are in Europe, you and friends are most welcome to stay at our home in Zürich, Switzerland – sort of a bit of home away from home. Jesse can tell you the rest.
Wishing you continuing good luck with your training for the upcoming season!
