The first week of summer camp went really well.  I got in some decent training hours throughout the week and then had an epic training day on Saturday which left me needing  a rest day on Sunday.  Week 2 was going to prove more challenging since my 2 1 hour breaks were in the afternoon and not back to back.  I was going to manage just fine though considering I was leading moutain biking in the morning.  I could also get to bed earlier because my kids were older and didn’t wake me up in the middle of the night.  It turns out that none of this even mattered, though.  We got a couple staff members here with H1N1 and on Tuesday we had to close camp and send the kids home.

So, today is the last full day of summer staff training and I have my training plan for the next 9 weeks in place.  Training during the summer will be challenging, but I will have more time for it than I have had during staff training.  The past 10 days have started with optional prayer at 7:30, and ended with our small groups usually around 10.  We always had 1 hour off…immediately after lunch.  This has been a less than ideal situation, making it impossible to get do all my workouts and get enough sleep.

In case it was not obvious, now is the time of year when I have the least amount of free time.  I basically wake up in the morning and then it’s go, go, go, until I fall into my bed at night.  I’m barely finding time to get in all my workouts, so writing about them on a blog is challenging.

Today I made my running debut.  It was pretty good, for me anyway.  Especially if you consider that I’ve never been much of a runner.  I would do some running for lacrosse in college, but that was a joke compared to my ski training now.  I’ve come to embrace running since I’ve become a skier, but that hasn’t helped out too much.  The most I’ve run seriously is 3 or 4 times a week, but even that was rare.

When I was younger I used to say my favorite season was spring.  I now realize that what I actually meant was, “the end of spring when it starts to feel like summer.”  Of course, I was just as sad as the next cross country skier to see the snow melting.  But, once it did, and winter was obviously over, I became very impatient to skip this whole spring thing and move right on to summer.   The beginning of spring might actually be my least favorite time of year.   I hate cold rain.

Obviously I have not been attending to my blog.  I simply have had no time.  But I have been up to a lot of really sweet things.

Okay, so I’m totally sweating today.  But as the snow is melting, it seems like a good time to reflect on the past year.

Disaster has recently struck my life.  A series of events have recently turned sour.  The only conclusion I can reach is that this will be the low point in my training year.  I can only look forward to (some) things getting better.  Here is a list of all the silly things that have happened to me (including the silver lining) …

Okay, so I didn’t really race the Birkie this weekend.  I did race the Korte, but I figured people would be more likely to read this if they thought I was writing about the Birkie.  After all, Bjorn Daehlie did ski the Birkie.  I had a few moments last week where I seriously considered skipping the Korte and getting myself to Main Street so I could witness the Birkie finish.
