When I was younger I used to say my favorite season was spring. I now realize that what I actually meant was, “the end of spring when it starts to feel like summer.” Of course, I was just as sad as the next cross country skier to see the snow melting. But, once it did, and winter was obviously over, I became very impatient to skip this whole spring thing and move right on to summer. The beginning of spring might actually be my least favorite time of year. I hate cold rain. That being said, it’s kind of nice to have this weather between my two favorite parts of the year (winter and summer). It gives me a chance to really appreciate the blessings in my life (there are many more in addition to good skiing). Naturally, it also gives my body a chance to recover. After a nice hard season of skiing, some respectable (for a 2nd year skier) results, and a week of rest, I jumped back into training.
These days I’m doing 2 general distance workouts, with some short L3 and L4 intervals, 1 over distance workout and 5 strength workouts a week. Doing strength 5 times a week allows me to alternate days between upper body and lower body. This also makes the strength workouts a little shorter so that I can also concentrate on good warm ups and cool downs. With my work schedule, it would be close to impossible to find enough larger chunks of time to do all the distance workouts, and 2 or 3 longer strength sessions. We will see how this turns out.
Hopefully it results in me getting a lot stronger, as this is also one of my goals for the upcoming training year. In order to aid in this I have bitten the bullet and bought a membership at our local fitness center -the house of wellness, run by the Ho Chunk Nation. I haven’t actually been to a gym since college. Since then, because of my lack of funds and sufficient time to work out, I have been making due (what do do you use in this instance? haha, you said doodoo!) with some home made equipment here at camp. Sometimes I just can’t do all the exercises that I want to…other times I am just less than motivated to work out by myself in my bedroom. The House of Wellness has been helping me with these problems.
However, this is only a two month stint. Once June arrives, I will be way busy with summer camp, and only be able to make it to the gym once a week. At that point, I will revert back to squeezing in some shorter workouts on homemade equipment. Hopefully, though, this two month stint will give me the jump start I need.
Soon, I will have to attach a tire to myself before doing pull ups to make it harder. And by soon, I probably mean in a couple years.
