Sickest Studio Ever

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

This is totally off-topic, but considering I chose the topics, I think I can squeeze it in.

I currently work as a software developer for a studio in Hollywood that records musicians and sells software synthesizer instruments. This place just underwent a mega-million dollar remodel from some super important guy, and the opening party is Saturday night. While this place is pretty slick, and it’s now the first office I’ve worked in that eleminates the cubical wall and promotes good co-worker communication, the lips couches and black-lit neon stuff is too much of a departure for my earthy granola taste.

Yes, There is a nation forest in Los Angeles. I’m working in LA, right smack in the middle of Hollywood. The people I work with show up late at 10:30, program all day, and go home late at 9:30. What a life. The last time I was here I couldn’t break the mold on my own, but this time I’m winning the game in a big way.

Leather jackets, wild hair, gang fights, electric guitars. No, don’t bring back the stash, but I could deal with the jackets again:

Decent race, decent skis.

Yesterday was a brain-bender and a body crusher. I got three hours of sleep, compounded by poor sleep the night before, which can totally smash a guy. Sleep has always been a major factor for me, but one of the things insomniacs learn is to listen to (obvious) messages their body puts out about why it stays awake, and mine was saying yesterday it still wasn’t that broken.

“Lung searing sufferfest.” That’s what Duncan Douglas described the trails in Anchorage right now. I’d have to say I totally agree. It’s so cold that you might as well be using some kind of sleigh-bells grind with a metal base with graphite for lube.

So Busy

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

Too Busy, actually. I’ve got so much stuff on my plate right now that I can barely handle it, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

The biggest news is that I am trying to make a major transition away from computer programming – not an easy task. My work is fun, but working on a computer all day encourages a lifestyle that directly clashes with getting outside and staying fit. Like sometimes I feel like I have to change my personality inside to enjoy things of the natural world on a run or ski or hike and it can be a little tiresome. Yeah, sure, my work is about as flexible as one can hope to be and it’s possible to cram everything into one day, but spending 8 quality hours hard-crunching logistics just puts your body and mind into a state that is hard to break out of when it’s time to go outside, and going outside is my best source of life energy. Combined with a long dark winter and natural problems with insomnia, and it can get a little tough.
