I said before that if you didn’t come up to Fairbanks then you should have. Well, after today I am *extremely* glad that I’m at least not in Anchorage. Redoubt has continued to erupt the last couple of days, and all flights are grounded and as far as I know it’s not a great idea to drive the Parks Highway to or from Fairbanks.

11am Tuesday, Fairbanks opportunity arises.
2-3pm Doctors appointment
4-5:30pm Frantic phone calls for ash and snow highway reports.
6:30pm, blazing on the highway with skis, sleeping bag, Holly’s forgotten cargo, a keg of Nut Brown, and 12 party cups. Game on.

Spring Comes Early

How I managed to grow up in Anchorage without realizing that hiking the Chugach in the winter was just as fun as hiking them in the summer, I have no idea. So far I’ve hit the Turnagain Arm Trail, Bird Ridge, Flat Top (from many angles), and now Wolverine, and every single hike/run was exceptionally fun and exciting. Ridge running in the summer rules, but holy crap do snowy ridges and stand out, high contrast rocky profiles of snowy cliffs and filled in couloirs make everything so much cooler!

Job, job, job, crush, crush, smash, smash, site, site, regress, relax. GaaahhhH! I’m a little tired form working and missing sleep the last week. Oh well, screw it. Somehow double workouts are also finding their way into my schedule for some reason. What?!??! No, it’s not what you think.

Expert Senator De-experted

I thought this was funny.

Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski (R) got hurt alpine skiing at Alyeska yesterday. According to the ADN, the “expert skier” “‘lost her traction’” and “fell 300 feet” “on the second hardest of four difficulty levels.” I’m not knocking another journalist, but I *do* want to know what single black includes a 300 foot section of vert so I can go huck my own meat off of it! Ha ha. I’m at least glad to see that Daddy’s little girl is getting out and shredding it. Must have been over Lo-Lo’s, I can’t think of another spot near midway like that. Nice!

Recess? Punto!

Woah. We’re in a recession. Keep your jobs. Don’t spend money, don’t fly anywhere. If you have cash, buy property like a bat out of hell, otherwise move your markets to treasuries.

Otherwise, just watch this. If you’re a little impatient, skip forward to the interview, and put on your funny bunny hats.

OK, now go look at Billy Demong’s slideshow, because he’s American’s new badass.

Sunday Nuggets

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Ahhhh, it’s Sunday, and it’s a sunny day. It dumped over six inches in town yesterday and I’m trying to decide whether to head to Girdwood to rip it up on the slopes or to head to Kincaid for a ski orienteering race. Both would be tons of fun.
