Nanooks Take 4th Title! Top row (l-r) Aurelia Korthauer, Theresia Schnurr, Marit Rjabov, Anna Coulter, Julia Pierson, Elisabeth Angeles; Second Row (l-r) Alex Morris, Henri Soom, Erik Söderström, Einar Often, Ray Sabo, coach Scott Jerome, coach Matt Dunlap, and Tyler Kornfield
The 6th annual Alaska Nordic Cup (the dual meet between the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the University of Alaska Anchorage) took place on December 5 & 6 in Anchorage. After the first day (10/15 km individual start free) we held a slim, 1 point margin over UAA. Due to this, it would all come down to Sunday’s relay for the overall title. We needed just one relay victory to secure the Cup in Fairbanks for another season.
On Sunday, the men won 3 x 10 km relay over UAA securing a 4th Alaska Nordic Cup title for the Nanooks. Racing second, the women were not to be outdone in their 3 x 5 km relay. They, too, claimed the top prize. The final score over two days of racing was 49.5 to 34.5
On the men’s side, “UAF 1″consisting of Tyler Kornfield, Erik Söderström, and Ray Sabo posted a time of 1:31:21.0, besting UAA 1 by over three minutes (1:34:31.4). Theresia Schnurr, Aurelia Korthauer, and Anna Coulter took top honors over UAA, 50:53.2 to 53:12.3.
Our second men’s team (Einar Often, Henri Soom, and Alex Morris) also beat UAA 1 finishing in 1:32:49.3. The women’s second team (Marit Rjabov, Julia Pierson, and Elisabeth Angeles) finished in third, less than 15 seconds behind UAA 1.
The Cup victory was a true team effort and each and every member rose to the challenge. (And they helped clean up, pack the van, return rental cars, check in for the flights, etc, etc, etc.) Complete results may be found at www.alaskananooks.com
