The ski team consists of both an Alpine and Nordic team and is consistently among the top 5 teams in the country with 5 NCAA team championships and 21 individual NCAA champions in Cross Country Skiing since its inception. There have been nearly 300 All-American performances since 1973 including 26 in the last five years. It is the goal of the Nordic program to help athletes develop while they are in school so that they can pursue goals beyond college skiing when they graduate.
The University of Vermont and the Champlain Valley boast some of the best dryland and on-snow training opportunities in the country. The University’s close proximity to the mountains provides excellent opportunities for training in the fall and winter for the Nordic enthusiast. In addition to running and roller-skiing from campus we take advantage of the hiking trials and miles of quiet country roads for running and roller-skiing in the fall. Many of our harder workouts and time-trials in the fall are done on a 5km roller-ski loop on FIS homologated trails at the Ethan Allen Biathlon training center. In the winter the Nordic team trains primarily at Bolton Valley, the Ethan Allen Biathlon Training Center, the Sleepyhollow Inn, and our home course at Trapp Family Lodge. The alpine team trains primarily at Stowe Mountain Resort. The ski team races in a mixture of NCAA, Supertour, Canadian Nor Am, Eastern Cup, and USSA National Championship races from November to March.
The coaching staff at UVM share a passion for collegiate skiing. The Nordic Team is coached by Paul Stone, Patrick Weaver, and Fred Fayette. Paul is entering his third season with UVM and his 14th season racing and coaching in the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA). In that time he’s supported athletes to top 10 finishes at the Junior Olympics, EISA Championships, NCAA Championships, and U.S. Senior Nationals. Patrick , a two time Olympian, trained and raced on the EISA circuit for four years before spending 5 years on the National Team. He is entering his 2nd year with UVM. Fred is entering his 24th season at UVM. A tireless supporter of UVM and the Eastern College Circuit Fred received the 2008 EISA service award last season.
