Catamounts ski at Lake Catamount in Steamboat.

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

After two days on the race trail we opted to branch out today and spent a couple hours skiing at the Lake CATAMOUNT Nordic Center.  It was beautiful!  The grooming is impeccable and the wide open gently sloping fields were the perfect change of pace for us today…

Gettin’ some at the Mt. Washington Hotel

This past weekend those of us who were around traveled to Jackson, NH for racing and of course some quality spa time.  On Friday, after a picturesque ski at Bretton Woods we spent the afternoon at the Mount Washington Hotel Spa.  Thanks to Coach Weave’s awesome connections we discovered that our Nordic trail passes gave us access to the Hotel Spa.  Spending time in the spa was a refreshing and relaxing change from most ski trips.  It also served as an educational experience for Fritz, as he added the word “concierge” to his vocabulary.

Salut! We brought in the New Year with a great trip up to Quebec for the Canadian NorAm races in Val Cartier. Our journey started off on the right track with the help of our new GPS friend “Tiff,” whose genius for navigating the highways and byways led us through Quebec City with ease.

Fresh waffles and fresh powder…

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Sunday was the last day of our competitive season and Mother Nature gave us quite a send off.  We were treated to several inches of fresh powder which made for some good exploration!  Liz and the rest of the Bolton crew were cooking up waffles which we smothered in Vermont Maple Syrup before heading out to ski.  Caitlin and Johanna couldn’t get enough of the groomed trails while the rest of us went off exploring the high country.   I followed the tracks of several catamounts that worked their way up the to the Heavenly Highway and then dropped down one of the alpine runs at Bolton.

This week we start the off-season which means strength training and somewhat less frequent vans for skiing.  The weather looks like it should cooperate for at least a few more good skis in the coming weeks.

T minus 4 days and counting….

The carnival season is upon us with the Bates Carnival kicking things of this weekend at Sunday River and Black Mountain of Maine.  We had a nice team dinner last night with virtually the whole team present.  Patrick, Mae, Ellery, Jennie, Jesse, and Cole drove home through a snow storm from the Rumford Eastern Cups arriving just in time for Bill to address the team.  It wasn’t exactly Al Pacino from “Any Given Sunday” (who is?) but it was inspiring to be crowded around tables in the Bostwick Room listening to Bill on the eve of a new college season.  The theme, as it is most years, is don’t blink because the season is over in a hearbeat!

This past weekend was the last tune-up for most of us.  The men’s Alpine team worked out the kinks in Eastern Cups at Stowe.  Patrick had five people sharpening up for the Bates Carnival at the Eastern Cups at Black Mountain where Jennie and Cole were the top Catamounts in the sprint on Saturday and Jennie and Jesse were the top Cats in Sunday’s tough and snowy classic mass start.  Results, Photos.

Closer to home Coreen, Joe Connelly (St Mike’s), and I ran a time trial at Trapp’s on the courses for the UVM Carnival/NENSA Supertour/Eastern Cup February 7 and 8.  Athletes from Middlebury and St. Michael’s joined 11 Catamounts for a 10k and 15k classic on Trapp’s new race loop.  Franz, Juergen, and Chris lead home the men and Caitlin finished a strong third behind Robyn Anderson and Elise Moody-Roberts from Middlebury.  The course is excellent and everyone seemed to enjoy it.  Thanks to Bill Henchey for getting it race ready for us!

Check back for more this week as we build up towards Rumford….

Bolton Bill Koch Day!

Friday, January 9th, 2009

Patrick lead a group of Catamounts and Bill Kochers from the Mt. Mansfield Nordic Club through a fun day of games and jumping up at Bolton today.  You can find a good write-up of the event on the Bolton blog.  These events are great fun for everyone involved and really important to build momentum for our sport in the next generation!

Fall Camp at the Salmon Hills Outdoor Center….

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

I know it’s been quite a while since we posted but rest assured we have been working hard in our absence from the blogosphere.  Due to a lack of snow in the modern world at the beginning of our Fall Camp week we ventured out of our comfort zone and took a chance on the Tug Hill plateau in New York.  Fortunately for us the snow was abundant and the training magnificent.

When I think about what I’m passionate about in life, skiing and Shakespeare both rank pretty high on the list. Believe it or not, these interests are often interwoven in my life, as I relate Prince Hal’s battle against the French to the UVM vs. Dartmouth rivalry, or quote a sonnet or two as we cruise through the fields at Trapp Family Lodge on a crisp February morning.

4.7 miles and 1500 vertical feet.  Not the steepest climb around but that last mile is tough.
