Catamounts ski at Lake Catamount in Steamboat.

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

After two days on the race trail we opted to branch out today and spent a couple hours skiing at the Lake CATAMOUNT Nordic Center.  It was beautiful!  The grooming is impeccable and the wide open gently sloping fields were the perfect change of pace for us today…

Fresh waffles and fresh powder…

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Sunday was the last day of our competitive season and Mother Nature gave us quite a send off.  We were treated to several inches of fresh powder which made for some good exploration!  Liz and the rest of the Bolton crew were cooking up waffles which we smothered in Vermont Maple Syrup before heading out to ski.  Caitlin and Johanna couldn’t get enough of the groomed trails while the rest of us went off exploring the high country.   I followed the tracks of several catamounts that worked their way up the to the Heavenly Highway and then dropped down one of the alpine runs at Bolton.

This week we start the off-season which means strength training and somewhat less frequent vans for skiing.  The weather looks like it should cooperate for at least a few more good skis in the coming weeks.

The end of an era….

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

While we are sad to see them go we retired our old steeds this week.  They have carried us safely to and from training and racing for the last five years but it was time for a change.  We received delivery of the new vehicles on Saturday before heading out for Thanksgiving camp but sadly they were not yet registered so we left them behind in the parking lot.  While we were in New York we got a look at a green alternative that we could have considered.

Fall Camp at the Salmon Hills Outdoor Center….

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

I know it’s been quite a while since we posted but rest assured we have been working hard in our absence from the blogosphere.  Due to a lack of snow in the modern world at the beginning of our Fall Camp week we ventured out of our comfort zone and took a chance on the Tug Hill plateau in New York.  Fortunately for us the snow was abundant and the training magnificent.

Snow!

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Well it’s been a little while since we’ve blogged… it’s that time of year when the training is important but the weather can get in the way which can make it tough on everyone.  We’ve been pretty fortunate with the group we have this year and the weather this fall.  Despite a long dryland season attitudes are good and everyone is excited to ski Sunday.  We are headed to Salmon Hills, New York to ski at an alum’s touring center.  The snow is going to be good and there will be a bunch of other teams in the area this week so we won’t be alone!

I have added some pictures to the Picasa gallery from the last couple of weeks.  Here’s a few samples… enjoy!

The on-snow season is about to begin!

Skiing and roller-skiing….

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

We got some snow in the mountains Tuesday night so Patrick took a group up into Smuggler’s Notch for some skiing this morning.  Those of us with too much work on our plates this morning stuck close to home for some roller-ski intervals.  I can’t wax poetic quite as well as my colleague at Middlebury about eastern snow (post here) but as you can see from the pictures below both the skiers and the roller-skiers had stunning backdrops for their workouts this morning.   Not much chance the snow will survive through the weekend but the snow, cold temps, and fading light can only mean one thing . . . winter is coming east!

How much farther to the top???

4.7 miles and 1500 vertical feet.  Not the steepest climb around but that last mile is tough.

Jericho Time Trial #2

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

Today was one of the first really brisk fall mornings we’ve had.  It was a good day to go hard as the temperature really accentuated everyone’s post-race cough.   Chris Ziegler eked out a two second victory over first year Alex Howe and UVM alum and local skier Ilke Van Genechten skied to victory over Jennie Bender in the women’s event.

Camel’s Hump Hike

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

One of the more prominent mountains in Vermont, Camel’s Hump rises up out of the surrounding hills and stands somewhat alone in the skyline southeast of Burlington.  We were blessed with a stunning clear day this morning.  We hiked it from the North side and were rewarded with a number of stunning vistas even before we reached the summit.

A Typical Friday…

This morning we all woke up to quite a sunrise on our way in to do strength.  It was cool, clear, and spectacular….
