Finals are coming and there isn’t any groomed skiing to be had so we hiked up on Mansfield to see what we could find. An hour later we had found some pretty good skiing. There is snow in the forecast the next few nights, with any luck we’ll be skiing on the good stuff by Wednesday, till then enjoy these shots from Sunday courtesy of Caitlin, Mary, and I. There are more pictures on Flickr.

After a couple of days of cold temps and snow Mother Nature hit the reset button again. In response we held the first ever Chester Arthur Memorial Pursuit in Fairfield, VT this past Saturday. Not real popular in Utah Chester Arthur (the 21st President) signed the Edmunds Act which banned bigamists and polygamists from voting or holding office. More about Chester A Arthur here. Thanks to Cole for a few shots from the pace workout.

At long last we got a nice first day on snow today. Bolton got a good dump in the last storm and the cold temps the last few days have helped it set up. The fields are fun and the trails are an adventure!

Thumbs up!

What is this white stuff?

With Mother Nature throwing us a bit of a curveball we ended up in our fourth new location in my four years of Fall camps. This year’s dream vacation spot…. Stowe, VT. We had a great weekend with a good mixture of hard stuff, speed, strength, and distance. There is snow in the forecast and a crusty base up at Bolton so we should get some skiing in this week. Everyone has been training really well so when the snow does come we will be ready to rock… until then here are a few shots from camp. The athletics website has a Flickr site where more pictures and higher quality images will be uploaded. Below is a link to the UVM Flickr site as well as some pictures on a Middlebury Flickr site from a time trial we did with them earlier in the fall.

It’s been a great fall. Between the alpine and nordic teams we welcomed 10 new faces in September. We graduated a few people that will be hard to replace last spring but the newcomers have brought some great energy and we can’t wait for winter!

In the spring of 2004 the Vermont Ski Team began participating in the MS Walk in Vermont. Molly Gray a UVM alumnus and former captain of the ski team tells the story….
“The Ski Team first participated in the Vermont MS Walk in the spring of 2004. We wanted to pitch in and do something for the community that supported us, cheered for us, and believed in UVM athletics. I felt a deep personal connection as well because the disease had shaken my world in a way I would have never imagined. My mom, a skier herself and member of the US Alpine Ski Team, was diagnosed with MS in the spring of 1999. We, my family, couldn’t believe it then, and still have a hard time today, understanding why our Mom, our invincible Mom, could be the hostess for this kind of debilitating intruder. I soon came to find out that she was not the only one in Vermont living with this frustrating, disabling, and, in her case, incurable disease. However, like many in her situation, she was determined to continue to be the invincible Mom. Despite her worsening symptoms she missed not one home carnival when I was skiing for UVM, not only coming out to show her support for me and the women’s team, but almost literally dragging herself out onto the course to cheer for the men. Today, be it in the spirit of the ‘invincible mom’ living with the challenges of MS or in the spirit of giving back to a supportive community, it gives me great pride that the walk and the Team’s participation continues.”
If you’d like to support our team’s efforts you can donate to Walk MS through the following link and choose a team member to donate on their behalf….

Sunday was the last day of our competitive season and Mother Nature gave us quite a send off. We were treated to several inches of fresh powder which made for some good exploration! Liz and the rest of the Bolton crew were cooking up waffles which we smothered in Vermont Maple Syrup before heading out to ski. Caitlin and Johanna couldn’t get enough of the groomed trails while the rest of us went off exploring the high country. I followed the tracks of several catamounts that worked their way up the to the Heavenly Highway and then dropped down one of the alpine runs at Bolton.
This week we start the off-season which means strength training and somewhat less frequent vans for skiing. The weather looks like it should cooperate for at least a few more good skis in the coming weeks.

Saturday morning we woke up to a perfectly groomed course with clear blue skies and nothing but sun in the forecast. It was an awesome way to close out the 2009 NCAA Championships. We started off the day with a slim lead over Denver, New Mexico, and Colorado and while we didn’t end the day at the top we didn’t go quietly either.

The results tell the story for us today. Juergen was great, Franz was great, Caitlin was great, and Jennie was great! On top of our great day the Alpine did well too and we are sitting in second, 3 points shy of DU. Congrats to Juergen for winning a National Championship and Franz, Caitlin, and Jennie for being All-American. Fred keeps waiting for his alarm to wake him up so he can tell us about the dream he had where all four of our athletes were All-Americans on the first day of NCAA’s.
Thanks to all the parents, athletes, and friends who made the trip to watch today, it was great to have so many people to share this great day with!
