In the first nordic-combined World Cup penalty race, Bryan Fletcher (USA) made major headway in Lillehammer, Norway, on Sunday, climbing from 36th to finish 16th overall, and that was with four penalty laps for a total of 600 extra meters.
Skiing in second until the last lap, teammate Billy Demong waited until the last possible moment to take all four of his laps — and doing so, Demong miscounted and did three. Appearing to have finished in 11th overall (after starting 32nd), he was disqualified.
Eric Frenzel (GER) won Sunday’s competition (28:38.5) after starting second with no penalty laps. Fletcher was 1:28 behind. Americans Taylor Fletcher and Johnny Spillane failed to qualify with sufficient competition jumps.
