Doherty Captures Silver in IBU Youth World Championships Sprints

Sean Doherty of Vermont Collegiate Biathlon kicked off IBU Youth World Championships with a bang Friday, placing second in the 7.5-kilometer sprint on the first day of competition in  Obertilliach, Austria. Doherty was just 3.6 seconds behind Frenchman Fabien Claude, who won in 21:12.4. Both missed two shots en route to the podium. Rene Zahkna of Estonia was 14.9 seconds back in third with one miss.

Canadian Stuart Harden made it into the top 20 in 20th, with two misses and 1:02.6 behind the winner.

Youth men’s results

In the youth women’s 6 k sprint, Russian Uliana Kaisheva won by more than a minute in 18:08.7. She had one penalty, and Lisa Vittozzi of Italy shot clean for second, 1:00.5 minutes back. Russia’s Svetlana Mironova was third (+1:13.4), and Russia put one more in the top six with Victoria Slivko in sixth (+1:36.7).

Anna Kubek of the U.S. led the North Americans in 34th with two misses, 3:18.2 behind the winner. Canada’s Sarah Beaudry was 36th with three misses (+3:24.2).
