Canadian Nationals: Grey Wins Final Race of Career, Holmes Wins 30 k

Haywood Canadian National Championships wrapped up Saturday in Canmore, Alberta, with long distance mass start freestyle racing.

The Open men took on a tough five-lap 50 k which featured some of the biggest hills that the Canmore Nordic Center has to offer. While the field was deep, including a couple of retired top Canadian racers, it was the heavy favorite who took the win.

In the final race of his career, George Grey (CNST) did not disappoint, crossing the line three seconds up on Brent McMurtry (CNEPH). Kevin Sandau (AWCA), who is in his last year of U23 finished third, 19.9 seconds back.

Chelsea Holmes, who recorded a win earlier in the week in the 5 k freestyle, skied away from the top women on Saturday to a 20 second win. Dasha Gaiazova finished second, besting Brooke Gosling (CXC) and Evelyn Dong (XC Oregon) in a sprint to the line.
