Video Interview With Torin Koos and Laura McCabe.

Methow Valley Sport Trails Association Danica Kaufman sat down with Olympians Torin Koos and Laura McCabe as the Methow SuperTour’s approach.  Koos will race in the SuperTour this weekend before heading to Canmore for the World Cups and Olympics.  McCabe, a Methow local adds some great insight into the sport and its importance.  She is also racing this weekend.

USSA Points Lists

USSA recently released updated points lists.  These lists will be used to assist in the selection of the Olympic teams.

I have received several emails from people who have been having probalmes downloading the lists from USSA.  They are compressed in a zipped file and are csv formatted.

For convenience I have attached the two lists in standard excel spreadsheet form here.

Footage from the men’s 30km classic

Here are Gunnar’s comments on the footage:

This is footage that I took at about twelve different points in the race (from about three places for each of the four laps).  I included
the gaps when no skiers are coming by so you get a sense of the growing distance between skiers as the race goes on.  It’s not exactly
fine videography as the camera swings back and forth and you get unedited cheering and comments of spectators–but it does convey
fairly well what the top ten skiers looked like in the race from out on the course.

Classic Sprint Set to Start in Anchorage

There’s one race left here at U.S. Nationals, and one more opportunity for American athletes to establish themselves as choices for the 2010 Olympic team.

Today’s event is the classic sprint, which will be held on the same course as Saturday’s skate event. The temperature is currently 28 degrees, and conditions are solid after the four or five inches of snow that fell on Wednesday.

Kikkan Randall is again the clear favorite in the women’s race, but the men’s field should be more competitive. Kris Freeman, last year’s defending champion, scratched today and will not be racing, and the U.S. Ski Team’s Andy Newell and Torin Koos are in Europe and at home, respectively. Simi Hamilton, the winner of Saturday’s freestyle sprint, will be the man to beat–but expect Garrott Kuzzy and Mike Hinckley to be hot on his heels.

Snow Making for Hectic Waxing at U.S. Nationals

Boulder Nordic Sport's Roger Knight (l) and Fischer's Chris Hall (r) prepping test skis

Boulder Nordic Sport's Roger Knight (l) and Fischer's Chris Hall (r) prepping test skis

With half an hour until the start of the women’s race, wax techs are scrambling to find the right kick and glide waxes for their athletes’ skis. About an inch of fresh powder has fallen in the last hour, and according to Boulder Nordic Sport’s Roger Knight, “it wasn’t supposed to snow this early, and it wasn’t supposed to snow this much.”

Knight said that because of the snow, many teams are not only looking for new kick waxes, but they have also chosen the wrong glide. As for the kick, Knight said, most waxes are now running very slow. With the abrasive conditions underneath the fresh flakes, it will also be challenging to find a way to keep the kick wax on the ski.

“There is no magic bullet for today,” he said.
