June 10 Roundup: Multinational Marriage, Summer Skiing, Expensive Car Chrash

– Swiss biathlete Selina Gasparin and Russian cross-country skier Ilya Chernousov were recently married in the groom’s hometown of Novosibirsk, Russia, according to FIS. The couple, who have been dating for several years, are some of nordic skiing’s fastest. Both reached the podium at the Sochi Olympics with Gasparin winning a silver medal in biathlon’s 15 k individual and Chernousov taking bronze in the 50 k.

Norway is seeing a record number of skiers taking advantage of summer skiing according to BA. At the Fonna Glacier Ski Resort alone, over 4,000 skiers have visited since the beginning of the summer season. Compared to only 1,650 visitors at the same time last year, the numbers have drastically increased. While many visitors are alpine skiing or snowboarding, many cross country skiers are taking advantage of the sun and the snow.

Petter Northug is still feeling the repercussions of his drunk driving incident in the beginning of May. According to NRK, the 28-year-old Norwegian star was recently denied insurance to cover the cost of the wrecked luxury Audi that Northug was driving as part of a sponsorship lease. The car is reportedly worth one million Norwegian kroner.

(Note: This article was updated to reflect that the Audi crashed by Petter Northug was worth one million Norwegian kroner, not one million American dollars.)

  1. Brian May says:

The car was reportedly worth 1 million kroner … works out to about $167,000 US.

  2. Tim Kelley says:

If you google Audi A7 S Line … you can see new ones cost about 50000 pounds in Britain. So that’s about $USD 85000. Add to that amount import duties and taxes. 165K seems high. Bottom line – expensive mistake.

  3. Chuck Fritz says:

Northug is simply fortunate people were not more seriously hurt. Cars can be replaced, regardless of the cost.
