West Yellowstone JNQ Race Recap

Monday, January 16th, 2012

This past weekend the Intermountain division held its first of three Junior National Qualifiers in West Yellowstone, MT.  There were your typical Intermountain conditions with temps in the twenties, sunny skies, and perfect corduroy.  SVSEF had a great weekend of racing taking home a combined 13 podiums in the J2, J1, and OJ classes.

Saturday’s sprint saw 123 competitors take to the line on a fast 900m loop.  At the end of the day on the men’s side, Bridger Tyler (Ind) and Sam Miller (BSF) took home the J1/OJ and J2 wins.  For the women, Michaela Webb (Wasatch) won the J2 class, while Maggie Williams (SVSEF) was the J1/OJ champ.

Day 2 saw an even bigger field of 183 juniors in the 5/10km classic individual start races.  In the J2 class Karsten Hokanson (Wasatch) and Leah Lange (PCNSC) took home the victories.  In the women’s 5km Jessi Knori (SVSEF) skied strong to take the top J1 spot, while Kelsey Dickinson (SVSEF) was the top OJ.  On the men’s side, Carl Smith (MSU) skied away with the OJ win, while Ketchum Wilt (SVSEF) was the top J1, notching his first ever JNQ win.

The next set of races for these juniors will be in Soldier Hollow at the Super JNQ Jan 27-28th.

Also coming up in Sun Valley is the SV Nordic Festival Jan 29-Feb 5th.  We’ve been very fortunate to have great skiing here since early November, and another couple feet of snow are expected to hit the valley this week, so if you’re looking for a great week of Nordic events and races check out the festival website for details.
